Momen is the London-based duo of Iván Muela (piano/guitar/electronics) and Nat Philipps (saxophone/electronics), who create a vivid, shapeshifting world of jazz-influenced experimentation and textured ambience on their début LP, Sympathetic Resonance, out 8th of May on Unheard of Hope. Its eight tracks balance poise and catharsis, alternating between passages of compelling friction and euphoric grace that frequently blend into one another with natural ease. Muela and Philipps cite a broad range of influences on their creative approach, from the chorales of Bach, to time spent in post-punk bands, to the philosophy and processes of Ryuichi Sakamoto. During their sessions together, they found immense inspiration in the freedom and spontaneity of improvisation, attempting to capture both dissonance and elegance without overthinking. Most of the decisions that formed Sympathetic Resonance occurred outside the studio, establishing the narrative core of each improvisation and selecting its essential elements accordingly. Throughout the resulting creations, the duo explore the transformations embedded within apparent stillness, creating tension and release through subtle, wordless conversation.
