This term’s first meeting will focus on the separation of sensum from concept in psychedelic film as influenced by broader countercultural movements in the United States in the 1960s. As ideas of expanded consciousness translated to expanded cinema, there was an increased focus on the potential of film as a material medium. Following our women in the American avant-garde series which focused more heavily on the New York Film-makers’ Cooperative, this week features parallel developments initially centred in California. This edition focuses on films by Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage, Carolee Schneemann, Vincent Moon, Bruce Baillie, and more before turning to an examination of collectives such as Los Ingrávidos and their mission to “dismantle audiovisual grammar” through movement. Some of these films include graphic content, since the body in its dismantling and display was a crucial symbol as the anti-art response to anti-war movements. The next time we meet, we will be focusing on experimental animation and its concurrent development and present state.
